THE BATTLE OF NEW MARKET: Due to changes in leadership and direction at Virginia Military Institute, the annual Battle of New Market reenactment in Shenandoah County, Virginia, has been suspended indefinitely. This reenactment was held annually in May, on the actual battlefield, for 105 consecutive years (1914-2019). The original battle was fought on May 15, 1864 and included 257 VMI cadets who marched 80 miles over four days to supplement the Confederate troops. Primarily an infantry and artillery engagement, the Battle of New Market reenactment required only minimal involvement from our cavalry unit; nevertheless, it was a unique opportunity to camp and ride on the original ground and to educate the public, including many children, on our American Civil War history.
